Journey into painting

March 09 - May 04, 2024

Ceysson & Bénétière is delighted to announce A Journey through painting, an exhibition of Louis Cane's work. The show presents major works by the artist from his iconic Sol/Mur of the 1970s to his recent Peintures vraiment abstraites.

“In reality, I would say that the craft of painting comes down to that of color... It is what painting is about: learning color to understand the reason behind our desire to communicate through it. This language [...], which expresses the type of desire that the painter will have and fantasize about in regard to the malleability of color [...] whose apparent absence of meaning makes it an even more desirable material [...] because it seems to oppose no resistance... To be more precise, [...] I am forced to recognize that this malleability of color is only superficial. For a painter, seeing color requires not only to work on technical means [...] but also to be aware of the transformation of these means through their constant unfolding due to the imaginative power of color. It is to this extent that the artist, in transforming himself, also transforms his view of color [...]. I began to see color from the moment I was able to see myself [...] from the moment a repressed overflow spilled over onto the canvas [...]. It was in this chroma that I had to integrate some otherness. The craft and method of painting sorted things out. But isn't that what being a painter is all about?...”
