Carl Andre's works are first of all sculptures. They say so clearly. Their goal is visibly that of relegating statuary to the "dustbin of history" or, at least, to a distant past beyond the reach of any hoped-for "revival". These sculptures also develop horizontally. They are mostly made of flat modules - steel or copper plates, lead bricks - laid and aligned on the floor of the display area. They impose their materiality in an almost tactile way. They literally, therefore, consign traditional sculpture, statuary - always erected, upright, mounted, phallic - to a state of collapse and obsolescence emptying it of any relevant meaning outside ideological meanings disqualifying is as "sculpture" - according to the criteria of modernity. Carl Andre folds and unfolds his works in line with the laws and the yoke of horizontality. He subjects them to a kind of approach where the vision of them, when one walks alongside or tramples on them, combines with walking: walking that measures them, gauging their thickness, their weight. And experiencing their materiality.

Thus unfolds an endless questioning of sculpture and what can qualify as such. When elements like wood and stone, especially, rise from the ground in infinite postulated alignments, it is the absence of a pedestal that provides answers calling up these questions. We recall that Carl Einstein distinguished African sculpture from Western sculpture by highlighting the fact that it only rarely made use of a pedestal. And, like Robert Morris, the author of an academic work on pedestals in the work of Brancusi, Carl Andre has pondered the example of the Romanian sculptor, continuing horizontally the latter's infinite possibility of vertical extension in Unending column. Keen on mathematics, he arranges his "constructivist" alignments in one direction, like lines of bricks or chains of particles. Mathematics can be said to run always alongside poetry, music, or mysticism. It is necessary in this respect to recall that Carl Andre was strongly impressed by the Neolithic monument of Stonehenge. We then bump into one of the apparent contradictions of Minimal Art. It allows us to highlight a feature common to the latest avant-garde movements: the predilection for a systematic repetition of a pattern, structure or module. How not to think here of the heroic figures in the musical field: John Cage, Philip Glass, La Monte Young.
