   Presentation

It was during his studies that Alan Charlton affirmed his minimalist artistic practice and decided to devote himself exclusively to grey paint. He exhibited his gray monochromes for the first time in 1972 at the Konrad Fischer Gallery in Düsseldorf.
Since the 1970s, Alan Charlton's work has been recognized and exhibited at the Centre Pompidou (Paris, FR), the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam, NL), the Castello di Rivoli (Turin, ITA), the Tate (London, GBR), and the MuHKA Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst (Antwerp, BEL). His work is present in numerous public and private collections such as the Arts Council Collection (London, UK), and the Coleccion de Arte Contemporaneo "Caixa" (Barcelona, ESP).

"I am an artist who makes gray paint", this sentence by Alan Charlton written in 1994 is a statement that confirms 50 years of practice. Simple, it summarizes the consistency of his work through the use of gray, the geometry of forms and reflects the direct and systemic character of the artist.

He first exhibited his gray monochromes, which summarize his entire work, at the Konrad Fischer Gallery in Dusseldorf in 1972, after finishing his studies at the Royal Academy in London.

As a student, he made choices about what he would allow into his practice and what he would exclude. Charlton favors ordinary and basic materials, in search of an abstract, direct, urban, silent and absolute painting. After working with other industrial colors such as red, brown and black, Charlton chose gray for its promise of tranquility. He began to create a series of unfinished monochromes that were always being restarted.

In contrast to experimentation, the gray monochromes convey a materialist intent that is exacting and eloquent and powerful. Their grayness is comparable to the silent dust of urban industrial areas that leaves its suspended imprint on the city sky. Charlton treats each element of a work in the same way: from the concept to the construction of the painting, through the making of the paint, or the packaging (making his boxes). Wood, canvas, shape, size: all have the same conceptual weight and treatment. He approaches the painting as an object in itself, of which one must grasp and consider all the dimensions.
