Julius Bissier

Biography

He was born in 1893 and died in 1965. He studied in Germany (Art History Institute, Fribourg-en-Brisgau & Academy of Arts, Karlsruhe). He learned to be a good painter by himself after he had been involved durind the First World War. In 1920, he obtained his first personal exhibition in Fribourg-en-Brisgau. In 1929, he met Willi Baumeister and became his friend. He began to draw with ink in 1930. In 1934, a great part of his art is destructed in a fire witch occured in the University of Fribourg.
After brief studies at the Institute for Art History at the University of Freiburg and the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe between 1913 and 1914, Julius Heinrich Bissier is incorporated into military service. In 1918, after his return from Freiburg, Bissier continued his training in the field of painting exclusively autonomously. In this context, the profound friendship with the Bissier sinologist Ernst Grosse, who introduces him to the Far Eastern art, is of paramount importance for his artistic development. The first solo exhibition in the art association of Freiburg takes place in 1920. The style of the next decade is characterized by the influence of neorealism and surrealism. Towards the end of 20 years, the gradual shift to non-figurative painting is initiated by Willi Baumeister Bissier which becomes friend in 1929. That year, the artist gets a job teaching drawing at the University of Freiburg. In 1930, he created his first ink.
Almost all early works of Bissier is destroyed in a fire that broke out at the University of Freiburg in 1934. Under pressure from the National Socialists, the artist should give up teaching. He moved to Hagnau on Lake Constance in 1939. It designs, among other models of carpets and fabrics for the work of hand-weaving while expanding his wife Lisbeth. The artist is also interested in ceramics when he made the acquaintance of ceramist Richard Bampi in 1942. It is from 1947 that Heinrich Julius Bissier manages to incorporate the new color in his art after a long battle with oneself. It creates monotypes in color and wood carvings from 1948. This phase of creation is followed by a short period in 1953 during which paintings are geometric character spotlight. In the mid-50s, the artist discovers the technique of watercolor. At the same time, Bissier creates its "miniature" using the technique of painting with egg (tempera).
In 1958, after the first major retrospective in the Kestner Society in Hanover and subsequently presented in several German cities, the international success has begun. Bissier part in the Venice Biennale in the same year and in 1960, then at the documenta in Kassel in 1959 and 1964. In the early 60s, international exhibitions follow, they are accompanied by numerous ceremonies in honor of Bissier by awarding several prizes and the Federal Cross of Merit in 1964.
