In the spirit of challenging the limits of form and asking categories to collapse edges in order to find new freedoms, we are thrilled to introduce a sound interface between jazz musician Matthew Whitaker and modular synth artist Itai Asseo. This experimental performance is made in conjunction with the current painting exhibition, Rosy Keyser & Joe Montgomery: Wrecked Angle curated by Jesse Willenbring.

If Perception is a constructive process, then the interest in getting these two musicians together is rooted in building a sort of perceptual reef: responsive, drifty, stretchy, vital, and a shelter for the strange and the elusive. It is thought that music moves directly across the nervous system, allowing it to be felt before it is thought. In this performance, through listening and feeling, we can witness distinct genres loosen and change to accommodate aspects of each other. Music, like painting, can be the measure of attention and aliveness. When the ‘in’ and the ‘out’ of ‘inputs’ and ‘outputs’ fall away, a new coherence is born.
