Katherine Bernhardt est avant tout connue pour ses peintures de top-modèles, qui explorent l'hyperréalisme de la photo de mode et les normes de beauté. Plus récemment, elle a concentré son énergie sur une série de « peintures à motifs » - de grands tableaux aux teintes tropicales et fruitées, représentant des biens de consommation courants organisés d'une manière rappelant l'Art déco. Fluide et précipité, le style de Bernhardt donne à ses tableaux un aspect qu'on dirait provisoire. Il en émane une telle énergie qu'on ressent presque le plaisir qu'elle a pris à les créer. Après avoir, dans un premier temps, exploré l'utilisation de motifs dans le contexte de tapis importés, Bernhardt s'inspire désormais du wax néerlandais et des textiles africains. Elle sélectionne et regroupe ses sujets selon des associations émotionnelles sous-jacentes (hamburgers, frites et ballons de basket / café, cigarettes et parts de pizza), puis les décompose en détails élémentaires, en formes pures et en étendues de couleur afin de créer des compositions plus simples, mais expressives.

Dans ses essaims jubilatoires et écœurants de burgers, tacos, cigarettes, pastèques, frites, ordinateurs ou rouleaux de papier-toilette, Katherine Bernhardt tartine la surface de ses toiles, comme on remplit un caddie. En raison de la myriade d'objets présents dans ses toiles, son travail est parfois interprété comme une critique ironique du consumérisme. Pourtant, ce n'est pas une préoccupation consciente de l'artiste, qui est essentiellement motivée par une fascination pour son environnement du quotidien et par le fait de lui donner une expression nouvelle à travers la couleur et la composition. Internationalement reconnue pour ses peintures de top modèles conçues à partir de coupures déchirées de magazines de mode et, plus récemment, pour ses motifs de tapis marocains, Katherine Bernhardt décide en 2013 d'abandonner ces deux formes d'expression artistique pour se consacrer à peindre en laissant libre cours à son imagination, exploitant son propre réservoir fertile d'expériences, d'images et de sensations. Dès lors, Bernhardt réalise des toiles qui mélangent un assortiment d'objets reflétant ses expériences quotidiennes, de sa vie à New York à son amour de Porto Rico, ses racines de Saint Louis et sa vie familiale. Les objets sont peints avec une verve et une ténacité incroyables, véritable programme pictural en forme de liste de course sur fonds colorés: tranches de pastèque, boom boxes, ordinateurs, tranches de pizza, cassettes, hamburgers, ballons de basket, vieux téléphones portables, avions, fruits, requins, bouteilles d'eau, tortues marines, cigarettes, sharpies et claviers. Katherine Bernhardt ramène la peinture à sa veine idiote, chérie par le Magritte de la période vache ou par Philip Guston.
