Nancy Graves

Nancy Graves (1939-1995) est une artiste américaine de renommée internationale. Artiste multidisciplinaire prolifique, Nancy Graves a développé une œuvre cohérente composée de sculptures, peintures, dessins, aquarelles et lithographies. Elle a également produit cinq films d’avant-garde et conçu des scénographies novatrices.

Née à Pittsfield, dans le Massachusetts, Nancy Graves sort diplômée du Vassar College en 1961. Elle obtient ensuite un MFA en peinture à l’Université de Yale en 1964, aux côtés de Robert Mangold, Rackstraw Downes, Brice Marden, Chuck Close, ou encore Richard Serra, auquel elle sera mariée de 1964 à 1970. C’est en 1969 que sa carrière décolle, cinq ans après l’obtention de son diplôme, alors qu’elle est la plus jeune artiste –et seulement la cinquième femme- à bénéficier d’une exposition personnelle au Whitney Museum of Art. Par la suite, le travail de Nancy Graves est présenté dans des centaines de musées et galeries à travers le monde, ainsi que de nombreuses expositions personnelles muséales. Elle reçoit alors des commandes pour des sculptures in situ de grands formats et ses pièces entrent dans les collections permanentes de grands musées d’art internationaux. Souvent invitée à donner des conférences sur son œuvre, celle-ci est largement documentée de son vivant. En 1991, elle épouse le vétérinaire Avery Smith. Nancy Graves parcourt le monde et suit de près les grands débats intellectuels et culturels de son temps. Un cancer l’emporte à l’âge de 54 ans, mettant un terme prématuré à sa brillante carrière.
Dans une démarche qu’elle a décrite comme « objective », Nancy Graves transforme des sources scientifiques– cartes, diagrammes etc.- en œuvres d’art, en transcrivant leur complexe données visuelles sous la forme de peintures et de dessins fourmillants de détails. Intéressée par le croisement de l’art et des sciences, Nancy Graves est l’auteure d’un corpus d’œuvres captivant, à la fois rigoureux sur le plan formel et incroyablement expressif qui interroge les concepts de répétition, de variation et de vraisemblance, ainsi que la monstration et la perception de l’information visuelle.

Installée à New York, dans le quartier de Soho, Nancy Graves commence à se faire connaître à la fin des années 1960 en tant qu’artiste post-minimaliste. A cette époque, elle crée d’inédites sculptures représentant des chameaux, des fossiles, des totems et des ossements qu’elle assemble à la main à partir de matériaux peu conventionnels comme la fourrure, le jute, la toile, le plâtre, le latex, la cire, l’acier, la fibre de verre et le bois.

En réaction au pop art et au minimalisme, ces œuvres s’inspirent de sites archéologiques et des présentations d’anthropologie ou de sciences naturelles. Suspendues au plafond ou rassemblées directement au sol, ces sculptures engagent également un dialogue avec les idées conceptualistes relatives à la monstration. A l’occasion de son exposition au Whitney Museum, Nancy Graves expose trois sculptures de chameaux d’apparence réaliste. Une installation qui n’est pas sans évoquer les spécimens de taxidermie et qui interroge les notions de vraisemblance en art et en science, notamment du fait de leurs surfaces en fourrure rapiécées et peintes à la main. L’exposition suscite alors un vif intérêt de la part des critiques et assoit la position de Nancy Graves dans le monde de l’art.

Après une période consacrée à la sculpture au début des années 1970, Nancy Graves revient à la peinture. Ses toiles au style pointilliste riches en détails reproduisent – à la peinture- des images qu’elle collecte à partir de photographies animalières, d’enregistrements satellite de la NASA et de cartes lunaires, faisant ainsi se rencontrer abstraction et précision scientifique. Alors qu’elle reprend la sculpture à la fin des années 1970, Nancy Graves est l’une des premières artistes contemporaines à expérimenter le moulage en bronze. Elle donne alors un souffle nouveau à la technique traditionnelle de la cire en faisant des moulages d’objets trouvés qui donnent lieu à des sculptures à l’équilibre improbable, caractérisées par leurs surfaces polychromatiques et vives, et leur unique patine.

La renommée de Nancy Graves ne fait que croitre au cours des années 1980 grâce aux sculptures à la forme ouverte et gracieuse de plus en plus monumentales qu’elle réalise dans le cadre de commandes. Dans le même temps, elle approfondit également sa pratique de la peinture, du dessin et de la lithographie, et réalise de grandes aquarelles gestuelles. A la fin des années 1980, elle crée des œuvres murales qui associent ses expérimentations sculpturales et picturales sur la forme et la couleur. Dans ces pièces de grand format, Nancy Graves fixe des éléments sculpturaux polychromatiques à la surface et sur les bords de ses toiles peintes pour que les ombres de celles-ci se dessinent sous forme de motifs sur les peintures et le mur avoisinant.

Dans les années 1990, Nancy Graves réalise des moulages en verre, résine, papier, aluminium et bronze, et combine ces matériaux et couleurs hétéroclites dans des sculptures aux parties amovibles. Au fur et à mesure des techniques qu’elle s’approprie, Graves s’attache de plus en plus à réinterpréter et transformer des formes qu’elle extrait de ses œuvres antérieures –au lieu de puiser dans des sources extérieures. Elle crée ainsi des compositions complexes qui sont comme l’archéologie atemporelle et stratifiée de sa propre production visuelle.

L’œuvre pionnière de Nancy Graves devance les idées développées par certains artistes contemporains telles que le minage de données, et plus généralement une pratique artistique multidisciplinaire alliant la recherche et la technologie. Son travail aborde des questions philosophiques, perceptuelles, esthétiques et technologiques particulièrement pertinentes sur l’art à l’ère du numérique.
