La recherche de Hanae Utamura se concentre sur les questions de modernité, d'écologie et de technologie.

Les médias utilisés par Utamura comprennent la vidéo, la performance, l'installation et la sculpture. Elle relie les êtres humains et la terre, utilisant le corps humain physique comme un conduit. Elle explore les négociations et les conflits entre l'humain et le non-humain, et comment toutes les variétés des volontés de la vie se manifestent, comme dans le domaine de la science. En décentralisant la perspective humaine, Utamura diversifie les récits historiques et pénètre dans l'imaginaire de la nature.

La série de peintures *Presence of Absence* d'Utamura naît de la contemplation d'un site rituel où le placenta, un organe qui nourrit le fœtus dans l'utérus avant la naissance, et des restes humains ont été enterrés sous un mélèze européen dans Prospect Park, à Troy, NY.

L'herbe pousse actuellement à la surface du sol, qui contient potentiellement de l'ADN humain. La série de peintures reflète la lumière et se déplace sous différents angles. La forme de la peinture évoque différentes feuilles, le placenta, les membres en mutation ou différentes âmes. L'œuvre traverse du site de chagrin, de deuil et de traumatisme, vers un lieu de régénération, de guérison et de transformation personnelle.

En écoutant la continuation de la vie après la mort, l'organisme de la décomposition et l'activité micro continue dans le sol, ces œuvres explorent l'incarnation de la nature cyclique, de la mémoire et de la transcendance.
