Boutlis studied old master paintings and turned them into a subtle mash-up. He took up the techniques of icon painting and of 15th-century painting, meticulously making oils on wood, using fine brushes, magnifying glasses, the formats of Vermeer, taking inspiration from Vélazquez. He also took up the old technique of the cliché verre (glass negative), drawing on a sheet of glass and then placing it on photosensitive paper in order to make a print. By using this very early reproduction technique, he has integrated within the very structure of his images something that haunts contemporary painting: a kind of cinematographic discomfort.
