Jamie Chan was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1984. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn. She attended Bard College and before that UCLA. Jamie Chan's figurative paintings reflect on her own difference and belonging. Her figures are often derived from art historical sources. Her work adopts the allegorical spaces of Renaissance painting, plumbing art history with an inverted telescope. As a contemporary painter, the spirit of renaissance painting is recontextualized, most often through sources from Chan’s daily life. She describes her process and style writing, “I am an artist from Los Angeles, now based in Brooklyn. In my figurative paintings, I use color and texture to register emotional states that may include duress, passivity, or doubt. Sourcing my images from baseball cards and renaissance paintings, I also make reference to my office job and assess its proximity to Broadway musicals. I recently co-authored a review of Kai Althoff's work for the online journal 4Columns.”
