Jaya Howey was born in 1973 and lives in Brooklyn, NY. Jaya Howey’s paintings and sculptural installations romantically and satirically lament the conditions of artistic and societal life under late stage capitalism. Additionally, Howey’s paintings, fabrics, furniture, and ceramic picture frames thematize a struggle to rationalize the relationship between individuality and collectivity, criticality and complicity, artist and artworld, painter and painting. Howey has had solo shows at Bureau (New York), Standard (Oslo), Armada (Milan), Taxter & Spengemann (New York), and Marginal Utility (Philadelphia). Howey’s work has been included in exhibitions at The Kitchen (New York), Night Gallery (Los Angeles), Staatliche Kunstsammlungen (Dresden), and Team Gallery (New York). Howey received an MFA from Columbia University in 2006 and a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1999.
