Josh Brand consistently employs what he describes as a “habit of printing.” Since building his own darkroom in his basement as a teenager, he has constructed photographic images using collage, light, and shadow.. Often omitting the use of a camera entirely, Brand breaks against the conventional idea of photography as a means of documentation. In an interview he proposed that photography is “a model for a way of representing perception, or sort of a metaphor for perception on a broad sense where it’s kind of like memories shifting around that don’t necessarily have a logical connection, but there’s also a continuity becoming part of one experience, or potentially part of an experience where they make their own world together”. His work, like those of contemporaries such as Liz Deschenes, Markus Amm, and Wolfgang Tillmans recall the pictures group of the ’70s and ’80s. While one may easily get caught up speculating on the process by which Brand produces his images, there is much more to consider facing the work directly. Innovative chromophilia within the layers of color gradients, realistic photographs, slashes, brushstrokes, and hazy mark-making leave much to contemplate beyond process.
