Jean-Marc Cerino

Lives and works in Saint Étienne, France.

After he graduated in Fine Art, Jean-Marc Cerino settled in Saint Étienne, where he worked for the Museum of modern Art and become teacher at the School of Fine Art of Nîmes.
In addition to participate in exhibitions, Jean-Marc Cerino is invited in numerous conferences and seminars, he contributes in several publishing and projects with contemporary philosophers. He is also a member of the editorial board of the review De(s)générations.
Jean-Marc Cerino is a painter. He paints with wax or encaustic, a technique well known since the Antiquity that requires a meticulous and perfectly controlled know-how. During the XVIIIth century, the interest for antiquity provoked a great influence for this technique and its history. In the XXth century, few but not least important painters, Jasper Johns, Victor Brauner, Brice Marden, devoted themselves to its practice. Today, in a different way, Philippe Cognée and Jean-Marc Cerino have recourse to it as to claim their faith in the durability of painting. Jean-Marc Cerino incorporates his models and representations into a timelessness emphasized. However the artist works from photographs, flat images whose representations are deported outside of any reality by the technique and this from the shot time. The artist, with the choice of wax painting or walnut stain on a transparent support, highlights the fact that he doesn't paint these images as people want to reduce the real reality today, that is to say life in history. He paints from photographs in order to restore the truth anterior and posterior to the images that transcends the frame.
