Sandra Lieners

Sandra Lieners’ work analyses the relationship between analog and digital through classical painting and reflects the digital aesthetic that surrounds us. As a millennial, she has witnessed the birth of cell phones, the first computers, the internet and the constant growth of the digital in our daily lives. This digital aesthetic is opposed by the use of the noble and ancient technique of oil painting and the use of art history references that are planted directly and indirectly within the work. The "Beyond the surface" series developed in different places between 2017 and 2019 traces urban collages, lost visuals with "dirty" connotations through oil painting. In the 2020 series “the Green”, the classic subject of landscapes is interpreted through a contemporary lens that decomposes and pixelates the subject matter. The 2020 series "The light" pushes the blurriness that is omnipresent in Lieners' work as far as possible. A blur that recalls the photographic lens and the backlight in photography. The correlation between "high art" and "low art" is intensified because of the "white cube" context in which the works exist in their final presentation. The new works of 2021 lead the artist’s canon towards reflection on portraiture and feminism. A reflected contemporary conceptual painting approach that’s loaded with references.
