Chioma Ebinama

Chioma Ebinama est une artiste nigériane-américaine qui s'intéresse à la façon dont l'animisme, la mythologie et les philosophies précoloniales offrent un espace pour articuler une vision de la liberté en dehors des paradigmes sociaux et politiques occidentaux. Sa pratique est centrée sur les aquarelles sur papier, qui explorent le dessin et la narration visuelle comme pratique méditative et outil d'auto-libération. Son travail est influencé par une myriade de sources, de la cosmologie ouest-africaine à l'art populaire du Sud, en passant par le langage visuel de la religion occidentale et les traditions spirituelles orientales. Cette collision d'esthétiques est révélatrice de la vie nomade d'Ebinama, dans laquelle ses voyages, elle a collaboré avec des artistes locaux pour créer des textiles, des sculptures et de l'art portable. Née à Baltimore, Maryland (1988), Ebinama vit et travaille actuellement à Athènes, en Grèce.

Ebinama a monté des expositions personnelles à Catinca Tabacaru à New York (2018), Boys’ Quarters Project Space à Port Harcourt, Nigeria (2019), Fortnight Institute NYC (2020) et The Breeder à Athènes (2020). En 2021, elle monte un solo à Bucarest avec Catinca Tabacaru et participe actuellement à The Serpent’s Eye au Musée d’Art Contemporain de la Haute-Vienne en France. Ses projets à venir en 2021 incluent un solo avec Maureen Paley à Londres et un solo au Salon 94 à New York. Son travail a été acquis par des fondations et des collections internationales et fait partie de la collection permanente du Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).
