Presentation

Wanting to renew the pictorial vocabulary of the renaissance masters for a modern audience, Louise Bossut’s photographs tests one’s memory and plays upon what we know of Renaissance masterpieces. Her portraits from Brussels pay homage to the works of Jan Van Eyck, Roger Van der Weyden and their followers, through the high amount of detail that echoes the Flems’ technical advancements in their use of oil in the first half of the 15th century. Depicting as well the upper part of the torso against a black background, she includes creased clothes that further illustrate the Flemish artist’s attention to detail in their study of light and shadow. Her works, in this search also show characteristics that would be developed and used by the Italians.
Louise Bossut appropriates the vocabulary of the Flemish Primitives, but attitudes are closer to the Italian portraits of the Renaissance. Photographer analysis models through one set of hands and faces, accentuating the contrast between the darkness and the light diaphanous skins.
Designed as appropriations, and never be that simple quotes, photographs by Louise Bossut reflect its admiration of the great masters of painting and the history of
Art. Without carring especially to a period, they crystallize the idea of universal models for artists, whether painters or photographers.
