Presentation

Our new gallery venue in Lyon is opening with an inaugural exhibition of the recent works of Claude Viallat. The exhibition will gather a selection of works on fabric from his Tau series as well as works painted on tarps. Claude Viallat first used this medium on the occasion of his exceptional exhibition become almost mythical at the CAPC museum of Bordeaux in 1980. « In Bordeaux, the exhibition was a continuum where you constantly had in your visual field two or three paintings in different planes, either a canvas on the floor or one hung more or less far. […] Each canvas only mattered in itself within this play of interconnectedness. It was all about walking around. I didn’t want to impose any specific viewpoint. I think that […] there is no prevailing reading for a painting. I wouldn’t mind seeing one of my paintings hung upside down, on the side, or, if necessary, put horizontally when I rather see it vertically. Every perception of a painting, and of paintings, is the right one », commented Claude Viallat (from the catalog Collection art contemporain - La collection du Centre Pompidou, 2007).
