Presentation
Phillip King's work is notable for the richness and variety of its forms and materials, and the freedom with which he has moved from one expression to another. A student of Anthony Caro at London's St Martin's school of art in 1957-1958, he then worked as an assistant to Henry Moore before producing his first major abstract works in the early 1960s. He has been involved in sculpture throughout the second half of the twentieth century, and continues to create. The reuse of existing forms and the copying or resizing of his works are recurrent. Some of his works exist in multiple copies and in different materials. His teaching career in London (he was appointed Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art in 1980) and Berlin has had a major influence on the contemporary art scene, and has had a profound effect on many of his students, such as the young Richard Long.
