   Présentation

Joe Fyfe expose ses œuvres dans le monde entier depuis le début des années 80.

Son travail a figuré dans le légendaire « Times Square Show », New York (1980) organisé par Colab qui fait l'objet d'expositions individuelles à la galerie Christian Lethert de Cologne ; à l'ACME, de Los Angeles ; à la galerie James Graham & Sons, à New York, ; à la galerie David Lusk de Memphis, pour n'en citer que quelques-unes. Joe Fyfe a également reçu plusieurs prix comme ceux des fondations Pollock-Krasner et Gottleib, plus récemment (2015), il s'est vu décerner le prix de la fondation Artadia, à New York.

En 2010, il est le commissaire de l'exposition "Le Tableau", à la galerie Cheim & Read, New York, de façon à ré-introduire l'abstraction française sur la scène américaine. Cette exposition associe donc Claude Viallat dans un dialogue avec l'abstraction américaine contemporaine.

Les dernières réalisations de Joe Fyfe - qui évolue dans un espace mobile, entre peinture, sculpture et dessin - explorent à la fois l'héritage laissé par l'art non-figuratif et ses tendances actuelles. Dans son travail, ses écrits et ses projets de conservation - y compris l'exposition « Le Tableau » organisée en 2010 sous son commissariat pour Cheim & Read à New York, et qui fit polémique - Fyfe reconnaît l'aspiration utopique des premières expressions de l'art non-figuratif, tout en adaptant une approche plus pragmatique (et souvent enjouée) des alternances de notre culture matérielle.

Dans une intensification de la poétique du quotidien, du marginal et du négligé, Fyfe propose de plus en plus de matériaux rencontrés au détour du chemin, comme le cerf-volant qu'un enfant a délaissé, un panneau qu'on a jeté, ou une bannière abandonnée, dans des compositions presque abstraites influencées tant par un heureux hasard que par les expressions de formalisme les plus nobles. Ce faisant, Fyfe engendre une sorte de contraction dans son travail, un « push and pull » entre providence et réflexion, qui à son tour dote ses œuvres apparemment informelles d'une précision obsessionnelle.
