Jonathan Lasker
Biographie
Né en 1948 à Jersey City, Jonathan Lasker étudie à New York à la School of Visual Arts. Il poursuit ses études d’art visuel dans le fameux California Institute of Arts, plus connu sous le nom de CalArts, situé dans la banlieue de Los Angeles. Dans les années 70, c’est alors le bastion des jeunes artistes conceptuels, génération qui considère que la peinture est morte et qu’elle est tout au plus une activité naïve.
Jonathan Lasker, qui voit la peinture comme une évidence se rebelle alors contre le conceptualisme ambiant. Inspiré, entre autres, par deux professeurs, Richard Artschwager et Susan Rothenberg, il redonne un souffle à la peinture en introduisant sur des éléments picturaux basiques tels que la ligne et la couleur, une texture souvent monochrome. Ce vocabulaire nouveau s’inspire des peintres minimalistes, tels que Frank Stella, Brice Marden, et Robert Ryman.
Sur la toile, Lasker développe un language formel. Il y dispose comme des lieux superposés de marques tangibles, distinctes les unes des autres dans lesquels il assemble souvent couleurs primaires ou secondaires. Ses couleurs sont vives, intenses, contrastées. Elles peuvent former un parcours de lignes fluides ou, au contraire, un tracé qui se creuse dans la matière créant une accumulation de peinture sur les bords. Cette impression d’impasto ou de fluidité crée des temporalités très différentes dans la lecture du tableau. Contrôlées et structurées, ses compositions oscillent entre intuition et analyse. Lasker cherche un système pictural qui se justifie à lui-même amenant le spectateur à la limite du réflexe instantané d’une identification avec la figuration.
Il est intéressant de considérer les titres de ses tableaux ; The Boundary of Luck and Evidence (La frontière entre la chance et l’évidence), Life without thought, (vie sans pensée), ou Illusions of the self (Des illusions du soi). Ils soulignent bien le parallélisme que l’artiste entretient entre la nature à la fois dialectique et physique de ses marques sur la toile tel le tracé abstrait de mots.
Depuis les années 80, Lasker a exposé régulièrement tant aux Etats-Unis qu’en Europe ; ICA, Philadelphie, Hirschhorn Museum, Washington DC, Kunsthalle Bielefeld et Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam en 1997-1998. Il a participé à la Documenta en 1992 à Kassel. En 2003, Lasker a eu une rétrospective majeure au Reina Sofia à Madrid et à la K-20 Kunstsammlung Nord Westphalia à Düsseldorf.
Il est aussi représenté dans les meilleures collections au monde, au MoMA et au Whitney Museum à New York, à la Eli Broad Foundation, Los Angeles. En Europe, son travail fait partie des collections du Centre Pompidou, Paris, du musée Reina Sofia, Madrid et du Museum Ludwig, Cologne.
