Rien sinon éclectique, la pratique picturale de Ted Gahl est néanmoins unie par un respect pour l'histoire de l'art et un traitement humoristique du sujet et de la matière. Dans ses grandes peintures audacieuses et ses toiles mixtes, le bois coloré et les objets trouvés font saillie à des angles étranges, le texte griffonné et la figuration agressive s'affrontent et fusionnent, et les compositions se dissolvent dans l'abstraction pure. Gahl affirme qu'au cœur de sa pratique se trouve un intérêt pour la peinture et qu'il ne se soucie pas d'un style définitif. "J'ai toujours été un fan de la peinture minimale et monochrome, mais j'aime en même temps les éléments de figuration et de dessin dans le travail", dit-il. "Mon objectif était de créer des peintures qui, de loin, se lisent comme relativement plates, mais lorsque vous vous rapprochez, incluez des éléments de couleur et de forme subtiles."
